Update from Steve Watrous, Milwaukee Fair Trade Coalition Chair

Saturday, May 12 is World Fair Trade Day and 31  socially conscious shops in the Milwaukee area will host special tastings, sales and programs, plus you could win fair trade prizes.

If you’re going to go shopping for fair trade just once a year, make May 12 the day. You could buy a Mother’s Day Gift with a great story and no worker exploitation involved.

Shoppers who visit six stores will win a fair trade prize such as Wigwam socks, coffee, soap, sweeteners, nut butter, towels and more.

Free samples include Equal Exchange coffee and chocolate bars at the Outposts, and Mt. Meru coffee at Four Corners of the World.  Fair Trade for All will feature music and children’s activities. Peace Action will host a talk with photos at 1 pm about fair trade in Central America.

Some shoppers will make a day of it, perhaps starting with a fair trade waffles special at Sven’s, then several samplings and a program, lunch at one of the many coffee shops, maybe a bit of election work, ending with dinner at Roots or Verduras, newly participating businesses this year.
